Yasmin Ahmad, the Barrier-Breaking Director

This is The Keongomaniac's tribute to the film works of Yasmin Ahmad, the critically-acclaimed Malaysian director, who passed away a few days ago on the 25 July 2009. Known for her ability (and nerve) in breaking cultural barriers albeit at times controversial, her enlightened vision inspire many on the art of film-making and its ways in portraying one's perspective on especially contentious and unchallenged social norms.

The premise of this movie is very simple, a love story between a Malay girl and a Chinese boy amidst the diverse Malaysian cultural fabric, which is steeped with social and racial pressures.

What stands out for me in this film is the way Yasmin Ahmad was able to portray the realities of how social expectations tend to govern even the young. In doing so, the characters break such norms, with bitter-sweet repercussions.

This sequel, fast-forwarded a few years, sees Orked married to a much older Malay men named Ariff. Orked's father fell ill, and therein at the hospital Orked meets Jason's brother. There is also a separate side story about a prostitute in the village side.

In this film, Yasmin Ahmad bravely included controversial scenes not typically seen in a conservative Malay film, such as the depiction of husband-and-wife bathing together, and a religious man touching a dog.

"Everyone has a first love story to tell"

Starring Sharifah Aryana as young Orked, and Mohd Syafie Naswip as Mukhsin

This third installment to the "Orked Trilogy" takes the audience back to the 10-year-old Orked, where she has her first childhood romance with a boy name Mukhsin.

While it is unclear how this love story could have impacted Orked's later inclinations toward out-of-the-norm guys, but in a way Mukhsin was already one of them. The adult Orked also made an appearance as part of a 'alternate reality', where she meets her 10-year-old self.

MUALLAF (The Convert) - 2008

Clearly the most controversial of Yasmin Ahmad's films, Muallaf dives heads-on in the role of socio-religious dynamics in everyday society. The question of love, forgiveness and faith plays a central theme in this movie.

Muallaf was first screened in Singapore in 2008, via The Cathay's The Picturehouse. The movie however has yet to be screened in Malaysia due to its highly controversial elements such as the shaving bald of a Muslim female. It is slated for a 2010 release, that is if it passes the censorship authorities by then.

"Old Friendster blog" relaunched as Heritage Archives Link

Known unofficially as the "old Friendster blog", the predecessor to the Keongomaniac Khronicles blog has since been renamed Keongomania Blog Original. It has now been refurbished as a Heritage Archives link.

Bloggers can now access the website to see the origins of Haz Wayne's World, and the Keongomania Blogs humble beginnings. The blog was active from January 2006 - April 2007, and was definitive in The Keongomaniac's (originally "KingKeong") time in Millennia Institute (2005-2006). It moved to this current Blogger location on July 2007.

The original Keongomania Blog was known for its sometimes controversial metaphorical expressions, self-penned poems and the infamous homoerotic Haz Wayne's Hottest Males charts.

The Keongomania Awards is held annually in January to commemorate the Keongomania Blog's anniversary (first entry in Keongomania Blog Original was on 15 January 2006), and to create a sense of continuity between the original and the current blog now existing as Keongomaniac Khronicles.

This Is It

Before his untimely death, the late Michael Jackson, the Greatest Entertainer of All Time, was planning a series of concert at London as his grand comeback after battling years of unjust and cruel persecutions by lobbyists. While seen as having fallen from grace in his own country, Michael was still very much loved in Europe, hence the choice of London.

This is the video of Michael Jackson announcing his "This Is It" concerts and its promotional clips.

It seems eerily ominous from the tone of his own voice of how he described this as his "curtain call" and a hint that this may be the last time we the world would ever see him in action. To name the concerts "This Is It" seems prophetic now, with his untimely death. They say people often knew when their twilight is upon them. May God bless his beautiful soul.

The King's Last Dance:

Seeing him giving off so much effort for his professed last concert is truly heartbreaking. This clip was taken a mere 2 days before the King passed away.

So befittingly, the Michael Jackson Public Memorial Service was held at the Staples Center, Los Angeles, the very stage where he had his last dance, and where the King spent most of his last days rehearsing for the This Is It concerts.

A visibly saddened Mariah Carey opens the performance with the Jackson 5's I'll Be There.

Usher choked up in singing the tribute Gone Too Soon.

Gone Too Soon

"Gone Too Soon" is actually song written by Michael Jackson which is in dedication to Ryan White, an AIDS victim he befriended before the young boy died in 1990. In 1997, the song was also included in tribute to Princess Diana in her death.

Usher in turn sang Gone Too Soon as a dedication to the undisputed King of Pop, ironically a title he was no longer referred to at the end of his days, but an epithet duly returned to him only after his demise.

The following video montage was shown at his memorial in recognition of his many great achievements as a revolutionary entertainer, a global popular and cultural phenomenon, and reputable artiste worthy of a King.

Jennifer Hudson, who lost her mother, brother and nephew last year, performed Michael's Will You Be There in his honour.

It was mentioned that Charlie Chaplin's Smile was Michael's favourite. It was beautifully sung by his Muslim brother Jermaine Jackson, who too had difficulty holding back his tears.

Today's TODAY newspaper (9 July 2009) writes that "the essence of Michael Jackson's memorial cane down to 20 poignant, powerful seconds" referring to Michael's daughter Paris Jackson's farewell words to her father as she concludes the event when she took the microphone with her own eulogy, in addition to Jermaine Jackson and Marlon Jackson, the latter who said that only with Michael's death, will "they leave you alone", in reference to Michael's constant persecutions and a title of one of his songs.

TODAY also concluded that:

"It was a remarkably humanising moment. Then again, it was remarkable just to see Jackson's three children in public to begin with. A fiercely protective father, Jackson rarely brought his brood out into public, covering their faces in veils to protect their identity when he did.

All at once, Jackson wasn't the larger-than-life King of Pop or Wacko Jacko the tabloid freak. He was a doting father who had left three young children behind.

He was "Daddy".

Michael Jackson is survived by his three children, the first two being the result of Michael's second marriage with Debbie Row. The youngest was conceived through artificial insemination.

The King of Pop Michael Jackson, dies at the age of 50, at the UCLA Medical Centre, after being rushed from his home at Los Angeles, California, for reportedly having cardiac arrest.

Jackson has a career lifespan of almost 4 decades, starting from the days of The Jackson 5 and ultimately dominating the music scene during his heights, which led the media to christen him the "King of Pop". Michael was nothing short of a tragic figure during the last three-quarters of his life. Attacked left, right, front and centre by lobbyists, MJ was very much a misunderstood human being from the day he took the pedestal.

In 2005, Michael was cleared of all charges against him. Months before his death, Michael was preparing himself for a series of concerts as a comeback, where his frail health proves to be an obstacle, which eventually took a toll on him.

In Haz Wayne's World, a 7-day mourning period has been declared. The King of Pop's untimely death reminds many of the shocking passing of Sir Heath Ledger in January last year.

Michael Jackson was actually due to be knighted this year, and be the first living person to be conferred with the Keongomaniac Lifetime Achievement Award. This honour however was recently given to Sir Tom Hanks. It is expected however, that the late King of Pop, who embraced Islam in November 2008, will be placed on the fast track to knighthood.

Understanding symbolisms and its significance is important in living our life, for it also undeniably shape our outlook of things. Many dismisses symbols and imageries as the embodiment of the retardardation of the arty-farty. The Keongomaniac however disagree, believing symbolisms to be a manner in which a higher power communicates with mere mortals. Only the sad unenlightened are blind to see His signs where He reveals them. And you have but to broaden your mind and open your heart, to receive His grace around you in your everyday lives.

3 Movies That Can Get You Back Intuned With Your Lit Side!

+ FINDING NEMO (2003)

Yes a Disney-Pixar cartoon! I wanted to make this easy for you =) Finding Nemo is a brilliant work of character mix-and-match with amazing witty dialogues. Even though primarily the plot involves a father's love and his search for his son, I want you to pay close attention to the character of Dory (it gets better right!). Voiced by none other than the great Ellen DeGeneres, Dory embodies such a positive outlook of life, it was without doubt that without her help, the clownfish Marlin would not have been able to find his son Cheeko, I mean Nemo. ;)

Despite her short-term memory loss, her positive force guided the negative-minded Marlin in his quest. When you're watching this, pay very close attention to her lines, and the possible reasons as to why she does certain things.

1) What could be the reason behind Dory's short-term memory loss?

Usually people chooses what to remember, and what to block out. Dory's short-term memory loss could stem from the mundane-ness of her life, or that she has no family.

"Please don't go. I want to remember. I do not want to forget. When I'm with you, I'm home."
"Yes I forget things almost immediately. It runs in my family. At least I think it does. hmm, where are they..?"

2) Why was Dory able to memorise the address written on the mask, despite having a short-term memory loss?

This is strange, but not unexplainable. Given the mundane-ness of her life (which in my theory makes her forget), Marlin came to her life with a real quest to find his son Nemo. This gives FOCUS, and thus also a GOAL, a clear OBJECTIVE to be met. So when Dory signed up to find Nemo, it matters not that she keeps getting his name wrong. As long as she knows that her goal was to FIND NEMO.

"I dunno. I think I lost someone, but I can't remember."

3) Dory's philosophy of "Just Keep Swimming", and "half-full"

Dory's solution to a sticky situation is easy: to keep swimming. She does not mind the very least the dangers of sharks, and naively (or positively clever?) thinks bombs are balloons. She even enjoyed her time in a whale, and my most favourite of all (and perhaps the most obvious line that reflects her positive outlook of life), was that she feels the "water is half-full", as opposed to Marlin's "it's half empty!". Damn I love this show. ;p

"Oh it's alright.. it's gonna be ok.."
"That is a weird thing to promise. You cannot let anything happen to him. Then nothing will ever happen to him. Not much fun for little Harpo (Nemo)."

For merely being a role model for the force of positivity, The Keongomaniac gives his commendation to the character of Dory, voiced by Ellen DeGeneres (in Finding Nemo). This is the first time ever a Keongomaniac Commendation is given to a fictional character.

+ BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S (1961)

Yes I know it just keeps getting better! And this is perhaps the most obvious of choice. I wanted to give you something you can perhaps relate to, and this is the best movie to showcase that. Arguably Dame Audrey Hepburn's most iconic role, Breakfast At Tiffany's is a great movie only to those who recognises the daily struggles we have in our pristine lives. It is the sheer acknowlegement that things are not black and white, but exists are shades of grey that makes us the human that we are. Imperfectly perfect, and holistically complete. =)

This is very much a give-away. Look closely at the character of Holly Golightly and her outlook of life and love. A free-spirited individual who turns her back on the world and an extrovert who hides her insecurities with her socialite lifestyle, she eventually does not even have control of her own destiny, lost her beloved brother, but yet continued to cage herself in. Until of course she was knocked to her senses by someone who loves her for who she is regardless, for her beauty within.

1) Why does Holly find solace at Tiffany's?

Whenever she experiences her "mean reds", she will take a trip to Tiffany's just to look at the jewels on display. This was shown at the beginning of the movie, hence the title namesakes. Does this make her a purely materialistic character, or simply human to have desires for the unreachable? Note that she does not even splurge on diamonds which she feels are for older women, but basically she's revered by the sheer majesty of it.

"Nothing can go wrong in a place like Tiffany's"

2) Why would a socialite loves to visit a prison regularly?

Holly explains that "girls will look their best" when they visit Sing Sing, the name of the prison. This is not a blase comment, but a commentary that she too, like the girls, feel the need to make the inmates (or whoever they are visiting) feel good, given of course how deprived they are in prison. This again makes her a sophisticated person, not superficial, for she recognises the many levels of human suffering.

"Sing Sing, a rather funny name for a prison."

3) The Song "Moon River"

Pay very close attention to the lyrics of the iconic Moon River song (one of my favourites of all time). In what would be one of Hollywood golden age most memorable scenes, Audrey Hepburn at her most dressed down attire singing "Moon River" with her own voice. The song sums up Holly's true outlook of life and love, though she does not seem to want to admit it to herself.

"There's such a lot of world to see. We're after the same rainbow's end, waiting 'round the bend, my huckleberry friend. Moon river, and me.."

4) The No-Name Cat Named Cat

Take note also on the famous cat named "Cat" in the moive, and the reason as to why Holly refuses to give it a name.

KEONGOMANIAC NOTE: Breakfast At Tiffany's was named the Keongomaniac Classic DVD of the Year in 2008. Dame Audrey Hepburn was also knighted with the Sword and Shield of the High King (the highest honour in Haz Wayne's World) through the Keongomaniac Lifetime Achievement Award in the same year.

+ CAST AWAY (2000)

This might seem like a weird movie choice, but it is the mother of all movies dealing with the importance of symbolisms. Symbols and imageries are practically littered all over the place in this movie, making it the great movie that it is, and not the cliched stranded-in-an-island premise. It is also considered by The Keongomaniac as one of "the most beautiful movie ever made".

Sir Tom Hanks (who acted as the protagonist Chuck Noland) was nominated for an Oscar for his role, and won the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture in 2001.

1) The Symbol of Time and Place

Chuck Noland's first scene deals with him teaching his Russian staffs the importance of time. This is important when placed vis-a-vis on how he will later believed to have 'died' while actually stranded in a island for 4 years. The contrast and change before-and-after of him being "cast-away" is crucial to the central theme of the movie.

"Time rules over us without mercy... We live or die by the clock. We never turn our back on it."

2) The Symbol of Wings, why it saved Chuck's life

While stranded in the island, there is this one package Chuck decided not to open, purely because there is a symbol of wings on it. It is simple: wings are the symbol for flight and freedom (and liberation and emancipation..etc you get the drift). At the end of the show, he delivered the package, and wrote a note that it "saved his life".

This wings also became the representation of the new love Chuck will embrace (hinted at the end of the movie). So by this interpretation, his lover Kelly was not the only one 'with him' in the island that kept him going, but his 'new love' (unrealised then) too.

'WINGS' LADY: You look lost.
CHUCK: I do?
'WINGS' LADY: Where are you headed?
CHUCK: Well I was just about to figure that out.

This lines, while seemingly mundane, has great depth in terms of its meaning. Especially so since the scene is depicted at a crossroads. In life at times we need help and guidance to point us to the right direction, and more often than not, often we selfishly reject these signs, thus unabling us to move forward and in so doing remain 'stuck in the moment' and 'caught in the middle'.

3) The Symbol of Roads, the mother of all symbols

If you watch the movie properly too, the symbol of roads is used very clearly, though to the untrained mind, it is easy to miss. The long shot of the road and crossroads appear at the beginning and at the end of the movie. At the last scene, Chuck moves directly to the middle of this junction. My God that must be the strongest orgasmic 'symbolistic' thing ever in the history of cinematic symbolisms.

The image is superbly strong: A man whose life is now renewed is standing at the junction and crossroads of his future and destiny. It is solely in his hands, for the direction in which he takes still lies with him. However it takes another individual to lay for him what lies ahead of him, and the choices that he could make. You may disagree with me. But I believe he will take the road that will take him back to the 'wings' lady, and thus relish in his new lease of life.

"I have to keep breathing, even though there was no reason to hope."
"And I've lost her all over again... I'm so sad that I don't have Kelly."
"And I know what I have to do now, I gotta keep breathing. Because tomorrow the sun will rise, who knows what the tide could bring?"

That is some powerful shit. =)

4) "You're the love of my life!"

I really love this movie also because it is not pretentious when it touches on the topic of love. It is not corny, but very much concrete. In the beautiful scene where Kelly rushes out in the rain to embrace Chuck for one last time, she declared to him "I love you, you're the love of my life!". But given the discrepancy of Time and Place, she also recognises the fact that you do not necessarily settle down with 'the love of your life', which is sad but hard truth. And Chuck too, respects this and duly let her go. Now that is what I call love, in its most mature of sense.

KELLY: Chuck...
CHUCK: You have to go back. (said in a form of statement, not an order nor a question)

This movie is a fun watch, especially the witty moments in the island. If you're a true outdoor-type you will definitely empathise with Chuck's hardship in the island. If you're a Freud-fanatic you will simply love the whole Wilson-Chuck exchanges. Given that it is rich with symbolisms, it might not be an easy watch for the trained and enlightened mind actually, because it will really affect you. Call me a freak but I still tear a bit during the scene where Chuck lost his only friend Wilson the Volleyball. It is heart-wrenching. It gets me every time. =)

If anything, watch it for superb and totally believable acting of Sir Tom Hanks. You are an inspiration. God bless you.

Sultan Pardons Kris Allen, Removes Criminalisation

A frame of Kris Allen was lighted at the Dame Audrey Palace Hotel

after the Sultan's Pardon for all to see.

The Royal Grand Palace Istana Agung Di-Raja yesterday announced that Kris Allen, winner of the American Idol Season 8, received the Sultan's Pardon and hence no longer listed as a Keongomaniac Criminal in Haz Wayne's World.

Allen was the first-ever Criminal to be openly publicised in Keongomaniac Khronicles. He was given a WANTED arrest status after he was charged with robbing Danny Gokey's place in the finals with Adam Lambert, the True Idol. This list of Criminals were never made public, but it was rumoured that actor Jude Law, and Singapore's Julian Hee are among those having the criminal record.

Runner-up Adam Lambert filed a personal petition to the Sultan to request for the removal of Kris's criminalisation, as recorded in An Interview With the Lambert: The True Idol. The royal spokesperson cited Adam's conviction for Kris's innocence and possibly his former crush on him to be among the reasons for the pardon.

Adam Lambert Admits Gay, Had Crush on Criminal Kris Allen

Keongomaniac Khronicles brings you an exclusive on the latest revelation by the American Idol Season 8 runner-up Adam Lambert, christened as the "True American Idol" in Haz Wayne's World.

In the latest issue of the Rolling Stones magazine (due to be released in the US on Friday), Adam Lambert ends weeks of hot speculation over his sexuality.

#1 REVEALED: Adam IS Gay

Lambert, 27, told the magazine that:

"I don't think it should be a surprise for anyone to hear that I'm gay. I'm proud of my sexuality, I embrace it. It's just another part of me."

He also explains:

"I've been living in Los Angeles for eight years as a gay man. I've been at clubs drunk making out with somebody in the corner."

As mentioned in Keongomaniac Khronicles in its previous entries, discussions of his sexuality came after widespread circulation of his photos kissing another male and in drag surfaced in the Internet towards the end of the Idol competition.

Regarding this, Adam Lambert had never denied those were him, nor has he openly admitted he was gay, but had famously declared:

"I am who I am. I have nothing to hide."

Adam told the Rolling Stones that with regard to the photos, he was worried people would think the drag ensemble was typical of him. He said:

"I wasn't ready for that. I've only dressed in drag three or four times. ... I don't tuck and wear breasts, that's not me."

#2 REVEALED: Why Admit Only Now?

Lambert admits that he was nervous about coming out while Idol was still on the air because contestants are under a media embargo, and he wanted to do it on his "own terms." He told the magazine:

"I was worried that (coming out) would be so sensationalized that it would overshadow what I was there to do, which was sing. I'm an entertainer, and who I am and what I do in my personal life is a separate thing. It shouldn't matter. Except it does. It's really confusing."

A point to note, American Idol Season 2 runner-up Clay Aiken only just recently came out of the closet in 2008. Will Young, winner of the inaugural UK's Pop Idol (upon which all the Idol series are based on), also came out after he won in 2002, to pre-empt an attempt by a magazine to out him. (Note: to "out" a gay out of his closet is to do so without his consent, while "to come out" of the closet is by his own choice.)

The Keongomaniac Shuns Closed-Minded Homophobia

In this respect, The Keongomaniac denounces all those who had, in one way or another, attempted to pressure Adam Lambert (or his likes) to "come out of the closet" because it is not their choice, but his. This closed-mindedness is not tolerated in Haz Wayne's World, where those who force others to do something against their will can be prosecuted without leniency.

The Keongomaniac also expresses "his utter disappointment" even to the members of the gay community who instead of supporting Adam Lambert's right in disclosing his sexuality at his own terms, chose to ALSO persecute him by dismissing his talents as a singer, but focusing on his homosexuality and the "baggage that comes with it". The Keongomaniac is not amused by this, and so is Adam.

Stereotypes about gays do annoy him. Adam has this to say:

"Clay Aiken's gay, and I'm gay, and we couldn't be more different. The only thing that is the same about everyone in the gay community is that we're gay. Why can't we talk about a human community?"

#3 REVEALED: Adam does not want to be a Gay-Rights Poster Boy

The American Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, a group that advocates for homosexual rights, said it hopes Lambert's "decision to live openly and honestly inspires gay people and opens the hearts and minds of his fans".

Despite his coming out however, Adam Lambert made it clear that he does not wish to be a gay-rights poster boy. Even though he supports gay-rights movements, he said:

"I'm trying to be a singer, not a civil rights leader."

#4 REVEALED: Adam had a crush on Kris Allen OMG!

Keongomania hits 5000 viewership in mid-2009!

According to the statistics counter started in January this year, Keongomaniac Khronicles reached a 5000 blog viewership today on the 1st June 2009. It is definitely delightful to know that this feat is achieved on this day, considered by some as the mid-point of the year. And so if the viewership trend continues, it would mean that by the end of the year, a 10 000 mark could be expected.

While some may claim that it is minor by blogosphere standards, The Keongomaniac is indeed humbled by the response of this website, known for its enlightened thoughts and expressions. He has vowed to continue the efforts in showcasing the best of infotainment in Haz Wayne's World.

The Keongomania Blog migrated from the old Frienster blog (now renamed Keongomania Blog Original) to its current Blogger location on 17 July 2007 (170707). The viewership counter count however, as mentioned above, was only started in January this year. This 5000 mark hence reflects the viewership for this year so far.

Daily Hits Certified Accurate

From next week onwards, The Keongomaniac will keep stats on the Daily Keongomaniac Hits, which is currently an estimated average of 50 views per day. While this function has been heavily criticised for being inaccurate, The Keongomaniac had ensured its accuracy by formatting it such that the hits will only be counted as 1 for the same user. In other words, repeated views by the same user will only be counted as a single visit. This ensures that the number reflects the number of viewership by person, not visits.

Interview with the Lambert: The True Idol

This is an imagined situation in Haz Wayne's World where The Keongomaniac interviews Adam Lambert after his defeat to the Criminal Kris Allen.

As The Keongomaniac sat comfortably at the Starbucks of Dame Audrey Palace, he waited with full anticipation the entrance of Adam Lambert, the runner-up for American Idol Season 8. Moments later the door opens to reveal a rather calm-looking Adam, 27, spotting a simple blue and green chequered top with jeans. The Keongomaniac stood in awe the presence of The True Idol, and was returned with a customary handshake and a great smile.

ADAM: So sorry to have kept you waiting... I understand you are a very busy man. (still smiling)

KEONGOMANIAC: No, not at all! It is my greatest pleasure to have the honour of this interview. You do know that here in Haz Wayne's World, you have been called "The True Idol"?

ADAM: So I heard! And thank you, I am deeply flattered. But no I cannot accept that, America voted for Kris, he IS the American Idol. He was my roommate and a great guy, and I am truly proud of him.

KEONGOMANIAC: Oh but the laws of the world does not apply the same here, Adam. Here you are our True Idol, as the legions of your fans would concur. And speaking of Kris Allen, he is technically still a Criminal, and we have to refer him as such.

ADAM: U guys are so mean! Kris is talented in his own right. Maybe because many did not expect him to go so far, but I've seen him from the start, and that guy certainly has his own merits.

KEONGOMANIAC: Which I do not doubt, of course (smirking). Well in case you have not read, after the show last night, the Billboard website declared the Criminal Kris's win a "surprise victory". So new judge Kara DioGuardi was right to say he was the "dark horse" in the competition?

ADAM: Err.. I'm not sure what to say about that. But it is still a popularity competition of sorts, so I think the results can still go either ways even at the very last minute.

KEONGOMANIAC: That's right, and therein lies the problem. Danny Gokey was never in the Bottom 2, and his elimination in favour of the Criminal Kris sent shockwaves throughout the world. Danny and yourself Adam, have been the favourites of Paula Abdul right from the beginning to be in the finals. The Criminal appeared out of nowhere to unseat Danny. This is a classic case of the underdog winning the race!

ADAM: Erm like I said, Kris is a talented chap too. And can you please stop calling him "the Criminal"?!

KEONGOMANIAC: Talented?? Not when he desecrated Donna Summer's She Works Hard For The Money in Disco Week! Oh and I'm sorry Adam, only with Tuanku His Majesty the Sultan's pardon can his criminal record be removed.

ADAM: Okaaay... I just don't understand why you guys are being so hard on him?

KEONGOMANIAC: Well I have watched the entire Season 8 from the beginning. Like all competitions, I believe the most deserving ought to receive what he or she deserves. And in this case, it is crystal clear there are those more deserving than him to win! (like yourself Adam... don't tell me you don't feel that way)

ADAM: Well it is still a voting contest...

KEONGOMANIAC: True! Thus it becomes a matter of public opinion isn't it, and less to do with talents. I'd wanted both you and Danny to be in the Finals because it would be the perfect finale for a perfect Season 8! Come on, the finals performance show between you and Kris was the most boring part of the entire freakin' season! Don't even get me started on the Criminal's singing of No Boundaries. Good God the horror of it! That is your Idol, America?? Shame on you guys.

ADAM: I really don't know what to say, you guys are so mean... (looking genuinely sad)

KEONGOMANIAC: It's alright Adam. I just feel a Adam-Danny showdown would be way better than a Adam-Kris, vocal performance-wise, that's all I'm sayin' dude. He's not your match. I wouldn't have mind a Adam-Matt, or a Adam-Anoop, or even Adam-Allison! That would be the greatest showdown ever! And I'm sure you remember, the Criminl Kris Allen himself said "Adam deserves this" after he was crowned winner! Need I say more!

ADAM: (sat silently with his eyes fixed on The Keongomaniac, mesmerised by the conviction the famed blogger has for him)

KEONGOMANIAC: Erm, I see you have no comments for that. And may I add, after the Criminal was announced the new American Idol, all the judges gave a standing ovation EXCEPT head judge Simon Cowell. He remained sitted! This is maybe the first time he remained sitted when the other 3 judges stood up, because usually he will do so as well. Yes he did give a congratulatory handshake to Kris later on, but we cannot deny the plain fact that Simon felt you deserve it more, Adam...

ADAM: (still too stunned for words, a little teary-eyed)

KEONGOMANIAC: You are the only contestant who had done more than the rest, surprising us with each performance. Week after week you take great efforts to renew yourself. You are the True Idol, Adam. America just did not see that.

ADAM: (speaking at last) I don't blame America. I am truly grateful for the experience and exposure. American Idol is just the beginning for most of us, it will open a lot of doors.

KEONGOMANIAC: You are right again, Adam. I think many of the Top 13 can cut albums and make a whole career out of it, including you. If Kris winning is about 'how commercial' or 'mainstream' he is, I'd say that's bullshit. If anything, I am glad for the platform this competition gave the likes of you, Danny, Matt, Anoop, Megan and Allison. Or the Bikini Girl for that matter! Hahaha. But still, you still deserve to win.

ADAM: But I did not, so... I guess this is when "being good is not good enough"? Isn't that one of your LiveJournal entry titles?

KEONGOMANIAC: Oh gosh! (blushing) I didn't know you read them!

ADAM: Well it's in the Internet, I happened to chance upon them. You're a good and enlightened writer (giving a quick wink of the eye).

KEONGOMANIAC: (blushes even more) Oh! Don't do that! Hehe. Well I am enlightened enough to recognise talent where it matters, regardless of who you are. May I take a dig at the Net speculations over your sexual orientation given the supposed exposed pictures of you kissing other males, and in drag?

ADAM: (unfazed) Well like I've said before, I am who I am, I have nothing to hide. [Keongomaniac Note: This is an actual quote]

KEONGOMANIAC: There are some who claims that this may be the reason for the sudden dip in your popularity votes towards the end, after the release of this net photos which can be Googled oh-so-easily. I am just disgusted if that is truly the case. Like I said, all of Haz Wayne's World stood by you for your talents and how much you deserve the Idol title, not by biased unrelated things like your orientation, which BTW, is totally your problem, not theirs.

ADAM: I'm loving you already man. (smiling)

KEONGOMANIAC: (shifts in his seat) Well, Season 2 runner-up Clay Aiken recently came out of his closet, after staunchly denying it for years. Given that you are almost in the same situation as him, being the runner-up, can we expect the same from you then?

ADAM: (laughs heartily) Hahaha! Well I never did deny anything at the first place did I?

KEONGOMANIAC: Well okay, Adam (smiling sincerely). I'm afraid that is all the time we have for now. Thanks very much for agreeing to this. We pray for your future success. And you will always be The True Idol in Haz Wayne's World, no matter what.

Kris Allen declared a Criminal in Haz Wayne's World

Kristopher Neil Allen, retardedly known simply as Kris Allen, 23, has been formally charged with Grand Theft in Haz Wayne's World. The first-ever publicised Keongomaniac Criminal, Kris Allen's existence has been described by the Philosopher-King as "dangerous and subversive" and decreed by Tuanku His Majesty the Sultan himself as a "clear threat to world peace".

By going against The Keongomaniac's choice of Adam Lambert VS Danny Gokey in the finals of American Idol Season 8, the Criminal Kris Allen has stolen the well-deserved spot of Danny, and thus caused disequilibrium to the common order. Should the Criminal wins the American Idol, it would break all chances for the show to be the first-ever Keongomaniac TV Programme of the Year in the 4th Keongomania Awards.

2008's Songs of the Year Reduced!

In an all not too surprising a move, The Keongomaniac revised last year's Keongomaniac Songs of the Year, first revealed in the 3rd Keongomania Awards held early this year. The original list includes an unprecendeted 15 songs being named Keongomaniac Songs of the Year, a stark contrast when compared to only 3 Songs of the Year in 2007.

In essence, the changes include the removing of 5 songs from the coveted list, leaving it with a standardised 10. While they are of no particular order, the numbers reflects the approximate chronology of its local radio release.

Songs that were removed:

Disenchanted - My Chemical Romance
Piece of Me - Britney Spears, Princess of Pop (Haz Wayne's World)
4 Minutes - Madonna feat. Justin Timberlake
American Boy - Estelle feat. Kanye West
Make It Mine - Jason Mraz

4 Minutes however was slatted as a Special Mention for Keongomaniac Songs of the Year. A Special Mention is not a full-fledged Keongomaniac Recognition ("of-the-year" award), but a somewhat subdued version (thus cannot earn the Blue Border, but a recognition nonetheless). The other 2 Special Mentions remain unchanged. Back in 2007, Elliot Yamin's Wait For You was the only Special Mention in the Songs Category.

The Keongomaniac is notoriously known to make changes to priorly-published awards and recognitions. This however is the first revision made to the results of the latest 3rd Keongomania Awards.

With these revisions at the Songs Category, Leona Lewis remains thus as the only singer to have 2 of her songs (Bleeding Love and Better In Time) as Keongomaniac Songs of the Year. Jason Mraz, who originally have 2 songs as well (I'm Yours and Make It Mine) is now only left with one. Indonesian band ST12's PUSPA remains as the Non-English Song of the Year, and Mariah Carey, Queen of the Music Arena (Haz Wayne's World), also retains the most prestigious recognition of Keongomaniac Overall Song of the Year with I'll Be Lovin' You Long Time.

Adam Lambert Kissed Matt Giraud on Elimination?

Did Adam Lambert kissed eliminated Matt Giraud on the American Idol results show last night? Some netizens certainly think so. There was a small debate whether it was an actually kiss, or simply looked like one from the TV's angle.

The actual surprise though, is Adam Lambert, a frontrunner for Season 8's finals, being at the Bottom 2. In a stunning turn of events, Allison Iraheta (who have been in the Bottom 3 three times) was the first 2 to be saved together with Danny Gokey. The Idol-unworthy Kris Allen was placed in the Bottom 3 for the first time with Adam Lambert, but the latter was revealed to be the Bottom 2.

Matt Giraud has already of course been eliminated 2 weeks back but was saved. This is also the third time he was in the Bottom 2.

Adam Gay?

The 'kiss' controversy comes amid net allegations that Adam Lambert is gay, given leaked photos of him kissing another person of the same gender and supposed 'drag' pictures of him surfaced in the Internet (the pictures will not be published in Keongomaniac Khronicles after protestations in Haz Wayne's World).

Was this the reason for Adam's lack of votes? In a competition where talent should prevail above any other traits, we should not be allowed to be coloured in our opinion. The Keongomaniac on the other hand, still stand by Adam Lambert and Danny Gokey to be the finalists of American Idol Season 8.

Keongomaniac Khronicles have lined up a few new changes to the blog layout for a more updated look. The most prominent update include a new large introductory image featuring a slender model who somewhat resembles Paris Hilton, bending rather promiscuously on an old television set. The TV portrays a humourous fictional CNN converage of "Sex Scandal In Haz Wayne's World", where the heiress herself "denies sex tape with famed blogger (The Keongomaniac)".

The image was aptly constructed to convey the ideals of the Keongomaniac Khronicles blog and its infotainment nature. The contrast of past-present-future with a news from an old TV set with a modern provocative gesture exudes this.

The sidebar panel has also been changed to a maroon colour from its original dark grey. For the first time in Keongomania Blogger history, the sidebar is given a relatively contrasting colour. The maroon colour is chosen to honour the first Friendster Keongomania Blog (now renamed Keongomania Blog Original) which first appeared with a black and maroon layout. The colour is officially referred to as 'Keongomaniac Red'.

Malaysia's Political Prophecy Fulfilled

Datuk Seri Mohamad Najib Bin Tun Razak has recently took over as the 6th Prime Minister of Malaysia. His ascension completes Malaysia's most intriuging 'political prophecy', known as the RAHMAN Prophecy, where the first letters of the names of the 6 Prime Ministers spells RAHMAN, after the first PM Tunku Abdul Rahman.

Some critics of the prophecy has pointed out that the annointing of the letters are misleading. The letters are taken tounge-in-cheek to suit "RAHMAN", because since the first 'R' was taken from 'Abdul Rahman' (second name), then why was the second 'A' taken from 'Abdul Razak' (first name)? And while Najib is typically known as such, he has a 'Mohamad' in his name, making it 'M' instead of 'N'.

I guess of course prophecies are only as true as the people whom believed in them. But it is definitely very intriuging, for it to happen in real life, especially a stone-cold setting like a political Prime Ministerial succession. Of course we can look at it as a political trend, rather than prophecy, given the many family dynasty miring the political scene.

Current PM Najib Tun Razak is the son of Tun Razak, 2nd PM of Malaysia.
3th PM of Malaysia Tun Hussein Bin Dato' Onn is the son of Dato' Sir Onn Jaafar, the founder of UMNO, Malaysia's ruling party.

Gossip Girl famous bad boy Chuck Bass (acted by British actor Ed Westwick) has have his fair share of imitators, but none as apparent as the character of Jeremy Darling (acted by Seth Gabel) in Dirty Sexy Money!

This might be a lil backdated but since the second season of Dirty Sexy Money is not yet aired in Singapore nor its cable, this probably would come as news to the Gossip Girl local fans. Upon watching online the Season 2 episode 5 of the Dirty Sexy Money, The Keongomaniac recoils to his horror as he saw Jeremy Darling donning what seem as a similar scarf famously worn by Chuck Bass from the Gossip Girl fame during a gallery scene with Lisa George (image above). After a net search, it clearly shows that there was a fair amount of reaction from the American audience. Netizens are generally divided, but with one camp saying Jeremy can never live up to Chuck's popularity (or notoriety, well SPOILER ALERT despite sleeping with Lisa, Nick George's wife, on a couple of occasion in DSM season 2).

We could see it positively, even though most will say that THE scarf belongs to Chuck Bass only. Both TV series deals with the same thematic approach (discussed here in blog entry A Bane To Be Rich?), though regionally Gossip Girl has a larger cult following. I guess allowing Jeremy Darling to appear with Chuck Bass's scarf shows that TV dramas have finally decided to be less pretentious when it comes to characters of similar traits, and indeed embraces them. Having them 'share' the signature scarf seals this deal. But it wouldn't be a signature anymore if two uses them right?

As Chuck would say, "Do not mock the scarf". But if he is ever to meet Jeremy, you and I know he would almost definitely declare...

I hope a lot of you out there are following American Idol like I do, this Season 8 is arguably the best one so far, with all its new changes to make it stay interesting for viewers. Like what new Idol judge Kare DioGuardi would have exclaimed, "I feel good!" as she bangs the table with immense satisfaction.

Today The Keongomaniac zooms in on one of the most outrageous comparisons in the history of comparisons. Some netizens have likened Top 13 finalist Adam Lambert to Joe Jonas (ulgh), the second brother of the kiddish Jonas Brothers! On such an incredulous comparison, The Keongomaniac can only say, Adam Lambert, 27, is about to be a greater star than all the Jonases combined, with such great vocals and looks, especially after yesterday's Michael Jackson's Black Or White performance. Can Lovebug, or When You Look Me In The Eyes even come close, not by one bit!

Better voice, better looks Adam Lambert wins hands down. Comparing him to Joe Jonas, 19, is an utter insult! The Keongomaniac predicts either him or Danny Gokey to be the next American Idol. Or Anoop Desai too if he is lucky enough to get through.

After the successful launch of the second complementary blog at LiveJournal called Speaking Silence of a Dream, what is next for the Keongomania Blogs? We look into its brief history and future plans in the blogosphere.

BRIEF HISTORY

Started on 11 January 2006 (110106) as a Friendster blog with its pioneering entry Aftermath of the Days of White (left picture), the Keongomania Blog moved to its present Keongomaniac Khronicles Blogger location on 17 July 2007 (170707) with its first entry The Best Harry Potter Film So Far, a movie review for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Recently on 21st February 2009 (210209), Keongomania Blog expanded to include a complementary LiveJournal. In order to maintain a sense of continuity, the Keongomania Awards is held every year in conjunction with the Blog's anniversay, its 3rd this year.

EVOLUTION AND RECENT PROGRESS

The original Keongomania Blog in Friendster primarily discussed topics with focus on metaphorical expression. While there were also personal and entertainment-oriented entries, it became rather inaccessible to readers. Moving to the mainstream Blogger, the essence of the blog is still maintained though high-end metaphorical elements were abandoned in favour of personalised entries. With an inclusion of movie reviews, the Keongomaniac Khronicles entered a realm of infotainment (information + entertainment) and became increasingly so.

This led to the opening of the Speaking Silence of a Dream LiveJournal which focuses more on the personalised thoughts. Developments are still underway on what direction the Keongomaniac Khronicles (main mother site for the Keongomania Blogs) would take, but it is most likely to retain its infotainment nature.

RELINKING OLD FRIENDSTER BLOG

Efforts are now being undertaken to make available a link to allow access to the original Friendster Blog so as to preserve its heritage and Keongomania Blog's humble beginnings. It will allow other bloggers to visit the site and see how far the Blog has come thus far.

PROPOSED MOVIES BLOG

More exciting development is also in store! Discussions are now underway for a proposed creation of another separate blog dedicated solely to movies tentatively called MovieXpose (depicted is the propsed logo). This blog would feature The Keongomaniac movie reviews (currently reviews are placed on the sidebar of the Keongomaniac Khronicles under "Keong at the Movies"). In addition to that it will feature other links to movie sites so that bloggers will be able to find out more about the featured movies. Other proposals in the site include DVD reviews, recommedations and upcoming movie trivias.

There are concerns that separating movies from Keongomaniac Khronicles could render the blog "pointless" to a point that the main site would lose its stature as the 'mother site' for the Keongomania Blogs franchise. On the other hand supporters of the separation feels it would make the main site more focus in information and entertainment without having to feature movies all the time. What say you? Sir Heath Wins Oscar!

Sir Heath Ledger finally won the much-deserved Best Supporting Actor in the 81st Academy Awards for his last role as The Joker in The Dark Knight. In doing so he is the first ever actor to win in the said category posthumously in the history of the Oscars, and only second to do so in an acting award. Sir Heath is also the fourth youngest winner ever as the Best Supporting Actor.

After the screening of The Dark Knight in 2008, The Keongomaniac led an online poll to support for Sir Heath Ledger's win called Vote for Heath Ledger the Joker Campaign in the Keongomaniac Khronicles blog. This generated an unprecedented 800 votes from the blogosphere, and it all finally pays off!

Statuette Dispute

Though there were some dispute as to whom the Oscar statuette would go to, Sir Heath's family decided that his 3-year-old daughter Mathilda Rose Ledger would own it, though she can only get full ownership upon her 18th birthday in 2023.

This is the last of the categories in the Keongomania Awards. The Honorary Category houses the most prestigious recognitions in Haz Wayne's World, including the naming of the knights who are the Honourable Bearers of the Sword and Shield of the High King, the highest honour of it all.

Honourable Title

Haz Wayne's All-Time Favourite Fantasy (Book) Series

Unlike the Of-The-Year recognitions (in Blue Borders) which are specific to the year they are awarded, the All-Time honourable title (In Red Border) is a permanent recogntion, tailored for a particular entity. In 2007, the honourable title Haz Wayne's Greatest Villain of All-Time was conferred to Darth Vader from Star Wars.

In this 3rd Keongomania Awards, C.S. Lewis's The Chronicles Of Narnia is honourably named Haz Wayne's All-Time Favourite Fantasy (Book) Series. Favoured since year 2000, the Narnia books were referred to as "Book of Priceless Gem". Highlight were given once again to the book series after the successful film adaptations The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005) and Prince Caspian (2008).

In 2008, the Sword and Shield of the High King knighthood is introduced to the Keongomaniac Khronicles. This is by far the highest honour in all of Haz Wayne's World. Those conferred with this award will be known as an Honourable Bearer, and given the title of Sir (or Dame for females).

So far, the recipients of the Keongomaniac Lifetime Achievement Award (in Gold Borders) are honoured with the knighthood.

Conferred with the Sworld and Shield of the High King merely a month after his untimely death, rumours have been rifed that it was Sir Heath's saddening demise that inspired the creation of a "high honour" in Keongomaniac Khronicles.

While many have since questioned Sir Heath's eligibility in receiving the Keongomaniac Lifetime Achievement Award, his many great accomplishments as a very versatile actor and talented youth in an all-too-short a lifetime places him more than deserving in receiving Haz Wayne's highest honour.

Sir P. Ramlee and Lady Saloma Legend of the Malay film industry who was responsible for the great Golden Age of Malay Cinema in the Shaw Brothers studio of Jalan Ampas Singapore, Sir P. Ramlee (born Teuku Zakaria bin Teuku Nyak Puteh) was knighted after the illuminating P. Ramlee the Musical (by Malaysia's Enfiniti Productions) staged at the Esplanade in May 2008, in conjunction with his 35th death anniversary.

Sir P. Ramlee was conferred the Keongomaniac Lifetime Achievement Award together with his wife the legendary Lady Saloma (Singapore-born Salmah Bte Ismail). She had been credited as Sir P. Ramlee's muse and musical inspiration, and thus instrumental in his successes. It is understood that Sir P. Ramlee primarily receives the knighthood, which means Lady Saloma (as his wife) also receives the customary honorary title of "Lady", instead of "Dame". Nonetheless the award is conferred to both of them simultaneously.

Dame Audrey Hepburn

One of Hollwood's greatest and most beautiful actresses of all-time, Dame Audrey Hepburn is thus the first female to be fully knighted in Haz Wayne's World. An icon of her times and of the Golden Age of Hollywood, Dame Audrey is best remembered for her pioneering role in Roman Holiday (1953) and Breakfast At Tiffany's (1961). She is one of the few people who have received an Academy, Emmy, Grammy and Tony award, the four major entertainment awards in American show business.

In her later life, she dedicated herself as the UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, and has gone to Ethiopia, South and Central America, Vietnam and Somalia among others. For her humanitarian efforts, she was given the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1992. In Haz Wayne's World, it is interesting to note that Queen Natalie (Portman) who rule the movies has been noted by some as reminiscent of a "young Audrey Hepburn", and has almost similar features.

LITERARY CATEGORY

Keongomaniac Book of the Year The Keongomania Awards Literary Category is very much still under preliminary stages. Proposals are under way to further refine this category, to include separate Fiction and Non-Fiction recognitions. This year the Keongomaniac Writer of the Year recognition is not included for lack of contenders.

Sir Heath's first book-length biography titled Heath Ledger: His Beautiful Life And Mysterious Death written by British journalish John McShane is named the Keongomaniac Book of the Year. It chronicles Sir Heath's acting career before and in Hollywood with references to all his movies productions. This is considered Sir Heath's 3rd win, not including The Dark Knight's wins as a movie.

Philip Pullman's second book in His Dark Materials trilogy (first was Northern Lights, also known as The Golden Compass) The Subtle Knife receives a Special Mention. His Dark Materials was expected to win Book of the Year, but unfortunately the purchase of the last book The Amber Spyglass was disrupted for unspecified reasons.

This is the newly-introduced Keongomaniac Past Year Commendation (the only non-Of-The-Year recogniton in a Miscellaneous Category). This recognition is created to allow entities that were not given recognition in its year (for any reason whatsoever) to be acknowleged the following year. Usually this applies to the Music Category, where competition are stiff with a large number of competitors. Seen by some as a 'make-up' recognition, The Keongomaniac states it clearly that winners of this recognition is of equal status as any Keongomania Award winners.

Maroon 5's It Won't Be Soon Before Long is given the Keongomaniac Past Year Commedation. If measured by the Keongomania Awards standards, this album now stands equal to winners of the Keongomaniac Album of the Year (i.e Justin Timberlake's Futuresex/Lovesounds and Mariah Carey's E=MC2).

Songs wise, 3 songs are noted - Any Winehouse's Back To Black, Young Folks, and Shut Up and Drive by Rihanna. All 3 songs are given re-recognition due to Gossip Girl Season 1's popularity.

Keongomaniac DVD of the Year

In this year's 3rd Keongomania Awards, DVDs have unto them a Category to themselves. Out of the 53 DVDs purchased by The Keongomaniac in 2008, The Dark Knight DVD and The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian DVD were singled out to be co-winners of the Keongomaniac DVD of the Year. The recognition is considered by some as definitive since The Keongomaniac is an ardent DVD collector.

Both The Dark Knight and Prince Caspian have already won high recognitions in the Movies Category. This win is The Dark Knight's fourth win, while a third one for The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian.

2007 Keongomaniac DVD of the Year: Transformers

Keongomaniac Classic DVD of the Year

Fashioned in a similar way as the Keongomaniac Classic Album of the Year, this new Keongomaniac Classic DVD of the Year recognition is given to none other than the iconic Breakfast At Tiffany's (1961) from the time of Hollywood's Golden Age. This DVD would pave the way for more exposure to Hollywood legend Dame Audrey Hepburn (first female to be fully knighted by The Keongomaniac with The Sword and Shield of the High King in late 2008).

Another first-time recognition, the Keongomaniac DVD Box-Set of the Year acknowleges the contributions of DVD box-sets in Haz Wayne's World (usually in the form of TV series or sitcoms) as a medium of alternate satisfaction.

Being such an influential force in Haz Wayne's World with its introduction, the Gossip Girl complete first season DVD more than warrants the award. Looks like the XOXO was enough to single-handedly beat all 5 seasons of Smallville box-sets, a rare occurance where Superman is involved! Dirty Sexy Money first season was considered for Special Mention but the idea was later abandoned.

This unique recognition seems to stand on its own, since it is the only concert DVD contested. Due to this The Keongomaniac has been accused to deliberately lobbying wins for Mariah Carey, the Queen who has been highly-tipped to gain most recognitions in this 3rd Keongomania Awards. Customarily the entity that gets the most Keongomaniac Recognitons (i.e the Of-The-Year titles) would have the year named after it, just like year 2007 was named The Year of Harry Potter (Harry Potter received the most wins of 4 recognitions).

Keongomaniac Songs of the Year

There has been major changes in the Keongomaniac Songs of the Year recognition. In 2007, after some changes, only 3 songs are named as Songs of the Year plus 1 Overall Song of the Year. Controversy surrounded Beyonce's songs Listen and Irreplaceable as both were named as a Song of the Year separately.

This time however, 17 songs in total are honoured in the 3rd Keongomania Awards as Keongomaniac Songs of the Year, including the Overall Song of the Year and a non-English Song of the Year. Separately, 2 songs are given Special Mention, just as Elliot Yamin's Wait For You was given in 2007.

For the first time, Leona Lewis and Jason Mraz receives 2 Keongomaniac Songs of the Year each. Indonesian band ST12's PUSPA is recognised as the first-ever Non-English Song of the Year, while Mariah Carey's I'll Be Lovin' You Long Time is named Keongomaniac Overall Song of the Year.

Keongomaniac Movie Event of the YearWithout any shred of a doubt, latest Batman movie The Dark Knight deserves the highest of the Movies Category - the Keongomaniac Movie Event of the Year. This movie has already been highly tipped to receive this award, especially after Sir Heath Ledger's Oscar-worthy portrayal as The Joker. Even though his shocking death has caused a pall over The Dark Knight's premiere, it was already by itself one of the greatest film in movie history.

2007 Keongomaniac Movie Event of the Year: Dreamgirls

Keongomaniac Fantasy Epic of the YearThe fantasy genre is held in high esteem in Haz Wayne's World, thus the Keongomaniac Fantasy Epic of the Year is considered the second-highest recognition in the Movies Category. Known as "Fantasy Movie of the Year" in 2007, The Keongomaniac feels the Narnia movie series deserves an epic recognition. High King Peter of course has already won Keongomaniac Hero of the Year, making this a second win for The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian.

Keongomaniac Animated Movie of the Year
Arguably the best laugh anyone could have hoped for in a cartoon feature in 2008, Kung Fu Panda kicks it with such witty comedic precision that it deserves Keongomaniac Animated Movie of the Year (called Animation of the Year in 2007). Unforeseen circumstances have caused The Keongomaniac to miss the highly-acclaimed Wall-E, which disqualifies it for consideration. The other notable challenge would be Madagascar 2, but it did not quite make the cut.

Keongomaniac Comedy Movie of the Year
Interestingly enough, The Keongomaniac actually watched Bedtime Stories in January 2009, which explains why it did not appear in the 2008 Movie Ratings Charts. While prior to this the understanding is that only movies watched in 2008 qualifies for 2008 Keongomania Awards. However given that the movie was indeed release in 2008, so it was no contestation. Bedtime Stories has been described as "one of the most fun experiences in modern movies" by The Keongomaniac and was awarded a full Keongomaniac Fivestars, which pales Tropic Thunder in comparison, since the latter only receive Threeandhalfstars.

Keongomaniac Romantic-Comedy of the Year

One of the first movies watched in 2008, without doubt too, with a high Keongomaniac Fourstars rating, 27 Dresses was the Keongomaniac Romantic-Comedy of the Year, with only Made of Honor (also received Fourstars) as its competitor. Rumours has it that this win could place Katherine Heigl, who is a relative unknown in Haz Wayne's World, as a potential candidate in the proposed Haz Wayne's Fantastic Females charts.

The Keongomaniac have once imagined that the Romantic-Comedy of the Year recognition would be phased-out due to its lack of popularity. Apparently not quite so yet!

Hello and welcome to the much-anticipated 3rd KEONGOMANIA AWARDS, the most highly-prolific event in all of Haz Wayne's World! Here The Keongomaniac recognises the best of the past year in entertainment and more.

The Keongomania Awards is held every year in conjunction with the Keongomania Blog anniversary, its 3rd this time round. This year too, it is held in honour of the late Sir Heath Ledger, a week after his 1-year death anniversary.

PERSONS CATEGORY: World

Keongomaniac Person of the Year
The Honorable President Barack Obama was already named the Keongomaniac Person of the Year on the day of the presidential elections in November 2008, i.e even before he was named President. This award is the most prestigious recognition in the Persons Category, usually reserved for important pioneering figures. In 2007 it was given to Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor, the first Malay to go to outer space. For 2008, it is without any doubt President Obama deserved the recognition, for being the revolutionay first non-White president of the United States of America.

Keongomaniac Male (Artiste) of the Year
The Keongomaniac Male of the Year award this time round caused a 'subtle panic' for its lack of contenders, as compared to Female of the Year, where the royal battle between two Queens were engaged. However eventually it is agreed that Sir Heath Ledger (knighted on Feb 2008 with The Sword and Shield of the High King by The Keongomaniac a month after his untimely demise in January) would receive the honour as the Keongomaniac Male of the Year for his role as The Joker in The Dark Knight. This is to be the first of many awards for The Dark Knight. Sir Heath's honourary blue tile is filled in black as a mark of respect.

2007 Keongomaniac Male (Artiste) of the Year: Justin Timberlake (Album, Futuresex/Lovesounds)

Keongomaniac Female (Artiste) of the Year
The result is out, and with no clear winner the Battle of the Queens end with a peaceful draw! Both Queen Mariah and Queen Natalie are named co-winners of the Keongomaniac Female of the Year recognition. But can 2 Queens really reign at the same time? It seems Haz Wayne's World might just be big enough for both of them. Mariah Carey rules the singing arena, while Natalie Portman remains number 1 in the movies.

Queen Mariah makes a undisputed conquest with latest album E=MC2, cementing her royal status after her previous comeback album The Emancipation of Mimi. She is set to win big this year at the Keongomania Awards, and has been tipped to win the most number of awards, which would officially rechristen year 2008 as "The Year of Mariah Carey". Other contenders are Sir Heath and The Dark Knight movie.

Queen Natalie became Queen onscreen again in 2008 in The Other Boleyn Girl, a historic movie which was given full Keongomaniac Fivestars. From Queen Amidala to the Queen of England, she also was the youngest member in the jury for the prestigious 61st Annual Cannes Film Festival in May. This has been a great honour and is a testament on how respected she is as an artiste within renowned circles.

2007 Keongomaniac Female (Artiste) of the Year: Megan Fox (Movie, Transformers)

Keongomaniac Newcomer of the YearThis is one of the new recognitions introduced in this 3rd Keongomania Awards. The Keongomaniac Newcomer of the Year is awarded to Blake Lively from the popular TV series Gossip Girl, where she is plays the hawt Serena van der Woodsen! Several critics have pointed that while the move to include a Newcomer of the Year is commendable, it makes Megan Fox, who was a newcomer in 2007 seem unworthy of taking the Keongomaniac Female of the Year title that year. The Keongomaniac nonetheless stand by the decision.

Keongomaniac Hero of the YearIn Haz Wayne's World where Superman is venerated, Batman tried to dethrone the Man of Steel with the highly-acclaimed movie The Dark Knight. This however proves to be of no avail as the honours goes to High King Peter (acted by William Moseley) in The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, and yes surprisingly Clark Kent from the Smallville TV series acted by Tom Welling. Superman again steals Hero of the Year!

Peter, the eldest of the royal siblings of Narnia, has always been The Keongomaniac's favourite character in the book series, and his character has been delivered extremely well by William Moseley in the latest Prince Caspian. On the sidelines, William Moseley has been joked to be receiving The Sword and Shield of the High King knighthood (the highest honour in Haz Wayne's World), given that he portrayed the High King himself.

2008 also saw the most number of purchase for the Smallville series DVD boxset, a groundbreaking complete Season 1 to 5, which is just a shy 2 seasons away from the entire series. This contributed to Clark Kent's win as the Keongomaniac Hero of the Year. In 2007 which was The Year of Harry Potter, Harry Potter won the Hero of the Year together with Superman.

Keongomaniac Villain of the YearPerhaps of no surprise to anyone at all, the late Sir Heath Ledger's portrayal of The Joker is named the Keongomaniac Villain of the Year. It is one of the early recognitions that was announced during the course of 2008. A second win for Sir Heath, and a first of many for The Dark Knight movie. Narnia gets another recognition too with a Special Mention for Italian actor Sergio Castellitto for his superb portrayal of King Miraz, the usurper uncle to the titular Prince Caspian.

Obama embraces his "Hussein" name

As preparation readies itself at the Capitol for the inauguration of the 44th President of the United States, incoming President Barack Obama has announced that he would use his full name, which includes his middle-name Hussein, in the ceremony as of tradition.

"A New Birth of Freedom"

Obama is due to be sworn-in on the 20th January 2009, just 2 days away. The theme of the inauguration would be "A New Birth of Freedom", in conjunction with the 200th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's birth. The ceremony is expecting a record-breaking 1.5 to 2 million crowd.

President of the United States, The Honorable Barack Hussein Obama

Obama's decision to use his full name is understood to be part of his effort in improving America's image in the world, especially in the Muslim world, where outgoing President Bush's foreign policy has made the once 'leader of the free world' extremely unpopular. He was quoted in saying:

"I think we've got a unique opportunity to reboot America's image around the world and also in the Muslim world in particular."

Obama also promised an "unrelenting" desire to "create a relationship of mutual respect and partnership in countries and with peoples of good will who want their citizens and ours to prosper together."

What's in a Name?

Prior to this during the presidential campaign, many of his opponents has used his middle name "Hussein" somewhat against him, an expression of his foreign nature. Though the middle name has always been in the offing, Barack Obama himself has decided to use it in the open for the inauguration, with a clear message of the change he is to inspire, similarly since it is tradition for the President to use all three names in the swearing-in.

Keongomaniac Movie Ratings of 2008

Presenting the complied list of movie ratings for the past year of 2008.

6 movies were awarded full Fivestars during the course of 2008. Fivestars recipient are described as "exceptionally good" and "satisfying on many levels". The Dark Knight was 2008's Keongomaniac Movie Event of the Year, the highest recognition in the movies category. The inclusion of The Incredible Hulk has surprised many, though reports have it that The Keongomaniac was impressed with its unique exposition story-telling method.

The bulk of the movies watched in 2008 were given Fourstars. These movies are generally entertaining movies that have lived up to its expectations.

Threeandhalfstars are given to movies which deserves more the Three but not enough to make it to Four. It is believed that this is the only 'in-between' stars available, since "Twoandhalfstars" has not been given yet, and any movies deemed below Threestars are usually given Onestar.

Movies given Threestars are the lower-end of the "pass" criteria, but fortunately not bad enough to get the boot. Usually redeemed because seen as still having an effort.

Despite being the first movie watched in 2008, this movie is now the only one to have walked in the movies hall of shame for receiving Onestar, a sheer pity mark so as not to get any stars at all.

2009 is "Twenty-Oh-Nine"!

Hello and wishing a very Happy 2009 to one and all! Wait a moment, did you just pronounced it as "two-thousand-and-nine"? In this first blog article of the year, and in the spirit and joy of the new year, allow me to correct this most widely-used mistake.

Correct Pronunciation
Contrary to popular usage, 2009 is actually pronounced "twenty-oh-nine", (the same goes for years 2001 - 2008). Similarly, year 2000 is not pronounced "two-thousand" but instead should be said the year "twenty hundred". This convention is based on the fact that year 1900 is pronounced "nineteen-hundred", same goes for say, 1909 is pronounced "nineteen-oh-nine" and so on and so forth. In the article 21st century, Wikipedia states the following:

Regarding pronunciation of 21st century years, academics suggest that since former years such as 1805 and 1905 were commonly pronounced as "eighteen oh" or "nineteen oh" five, the year 2005 should naturally have been pronounced as "twenty oh-five".^[6] A less common variation would have been "twenty nought-five". Many experts agree that majority usage of "two thousand (and) X" is a result of influences from the Y2K hype, as well as the way "2001" was pronounced in the influential 1968 film, 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Many people, ranging from linguistic and academic experts to Internet bloggers, predict that the "twenty X" pronunciation method will eventually prevail, but a time frame as to when this change will occur often differs. The year 2010 is suggested by many,^[7]^[8] and the Vancouver Olympics, taking place in 2010, is being officially referred to by Vancouver 2010 as "the twenty-ten olympics", while 2011^[6] and 2013 are popular as well. The latest timeframes for change are usually placed at 2020.^[6]

While common media like the TV still uses "two-thousand-and-nine", Channel NewsAsia has been noted to use the "twenty-oh-nine" format.

2000 is NOT the start of the new Millennium
Next year we will be rid of the "oh" in our year with 2010. Hopefully we will stop saying "two-thousand-and-ten", because honestly, is that not more mouthful than "twenty-ten"? This kind of common mistake, used globally no kidding, reminds me of the great mistake when people call year 2000 the new millennium, i.e also the start of the 21st century. Academics generally agree that 2001 is the first year of this 21st century, not 2000. If you remember your early studies in History too, any teacher would concur.

Famous for her role as Rachel Green in popular TV sitcom Friends, the magazine declares "Is it just us or is Jennifer Aniston getting hotter?". Recently Aniston created headlines when she revealed that Angelina Jolie's comments on being in love with Brad Pitt (then the former's husband) in the Mr and Mrs Smith movie set were "not cool". No Male of the Year?

As the year approaches to an end, crisis dawn on Haz Wayne's World as shocking news reveals The Keongomaniac has no apparent contender for the Keongomaniac Male (Artiste) of the Year award! The Keongomaniac Female and Male of the Year are widely considered to be the top-most recognition for any artistes in the entertainment industry. Last year's Female of the Year was won by newcomer Megan Fox for her role in Transformers while Male of the Year was given to Justin Timberlake for his Futuresex/Lovesounds album which also won Album of the Year.

This year, singer-songwriter Mariah Carey has been speculated to win the Keongomaniac Female of the Year, though actress Natalie Portman has also been mentioned as a likely contender. This has led to the highly-anticipted Battle of the Queens due to the fact that both Queen Mariah and Queen Natalie are vying for dominance in their respecive royal rule.

Such excitement however cannot be found for the Keongomaniac Male of the Year category. Early this year with Sir Heath Ledger's untimely death, some has expected The Keongomaniac to present the Male of the Year award to him. Sir Heath has already be conferred the Lifetime Achievement Award and named the Keongomaniac Villain of the Year for his Joker role in The Dark Knight. Hence the only contender so far is the late Heath Ledger. But with such lack of male prominence this year, who else could possibly be named 2008's Keongomaniac Male of the Year??

Dirty Sexy Money VS Gossip Girl

The Keongomaniac shares his thoughts on being rich, famous and beautiful.

I recently got me the DVD box sets of Dirty Sexy Money and Gossip Girl, both its complete first season. The latter was sold at HMV a few weeks back and was totally sold out within a week! I guess the Gossip Girl craze is just about to hit those who had not been following it online, like myself. As a matter of fact I do not remember the last time local distributors make available TV series that are not shown on local television time. Guess the XOXO's too irresistable? Personally I would like to think its just hottie Blake Lively.

Both TV series do share somewhat similar issues of the day. For its background they depict the affluent class of peoples - the rich and famous. Set in the New York City, the Brooklyn Bridge is prominently featured in the cinematic zoom-outs. In fact, one of the episodes in Dirty Sexy Money depicts Jeremy Darling's 25th birthday bash at the Bridge, to reflect the kind of insane things the insanely rich could afford to do. What is interesting, the series attempt to show the viewers that being rich is not all roses as most of us would think. But ironically too, these kind of series give us the very insight into the affluent lifestlye that governs their daily routine, making "envy" an obvious choice of words to describe it at the very least. The contradictory nature of American TV serials? I think so. While we watch and aspire and drools, we wonder in our little hearts whether we can ever get to wear the same shirt or skirt of the characters.

In Dirty Sexy Money, the rationale mind of the key figure and family lawyer Nick George (Peter Krause) is juxtaposed with the ludicrous spendings of the Darlings, a filthy wealthy family. The eccentricities of its various family members are the highlight of the episodes, as Nick attempts to unravel the mystery behind his father's untimely death. Gossip Girl too plunges head-on on the apparent class divide issue, a modern Austen of sorts. Commoner Dan Humphey (Penn Badgley) manages to climb the social ladder by managing to win the heart of one Serena van der Woodsen (Blake Lively), whose very name sounds aristocratic. Viewers seem to still love a love story classicly divided by class, albeit set in an updated 21st Century setting. The idea that Prince Charming need no longer be a prince per se, nor a knght in shining armour for that matter, is not altogether revolutionary, but could still be presented in a fresh way.

What is it like to be rich, and inevitably famous? These series do stir in a direction which says that being richer, their problems are correspondingly bigger. Cleverly too, Dirty Sexy Money shows how the very fact that you possess richness becomes the gap that separates essential bonds like that of parents and children. Rich parents become completely dismissive of the wants and needs of their born-wealthy children. This is seen in Tripp Darling's relations with Patrick Darling and Jeremy Darling, and the Archibalds in Gossip Girl. Nate Archibald gives a classic resistence to the parents' dogmatic will, and eventually the young would stir the old back to the right direction. But does being rich, or having really loads of money makes one a different person, say, if he or she were not as rich? Jeremy Darling did muse that perhaps the problem lie with the fact that they are so insanely rich. He subsequently decides to take on a job and learn responsibility, even realising that people sees him only because he's a Darling. Same goes forKaren Darling and Serena van der Woodsen.

At the start of every Dirty Sexy Money episode Nick George narrates that "money is the root of all evil, or so they say". In Gossip Girl the Humphrey males are not tempted to be bought with money, but nonetheless do acknowledge that it is the means to go places. If truly it is the root of evil why would the capitalist world sought it? Because it brings with it the source of comfort and power those without it would never dream to know. For me personally, watching these series makes me aspire more to be part of a higher class of society, no matter how shallow that might sound. Climbing the social ladder is not a crime, but to lead a simple life one has to be simple-minded enough to wish it. Life is anything but. So why settle for less? It is a material world, its unequal. We can be atas, as long as you stay true to what it has taken to get up there. I would very much love to be rich and famous one day.

But rich, famous and beautiful? That would be the life.

"Total Eclipse of the Heart" is a power ballad written in 1983 and sung by the legendary Bonnie Tyler. Apparently it is inspired by Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights, according to Wikipedia anyway. But that does explain the uber offbeat-gothic nature of its original music video, check it out!

Obama is Keongomaniac's Person of the Year

Earlier today The Keongomaniac announces Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama as this year's Keongomaniac Person of the Year. This is in conjuction with the first day of polls for the United States as they start off the much-anticipated Presidential Elections. While Illinois' Senator Obama, whose full name is Barack Hussein Obama II, has been highly tipped to win the Person of the Year recognition, the timing to declare it during the start of voting (rather than after he wins presidency) signifies that The Keongomaniac sees him as the Person of the Year regardless the results of the elections.

The Keongomaniac Person of the Year is a highly prolific title which recognises the efforts of pioneering individuals who had in their own right change the world through their unconventional achievements. It is the hope of The Keongomaniac that these people would in time influence the course of the world we live in. Last year's Keongomaniac Person of the Year recognition was given to Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor, the first Malay astronaut.

Other Keongomaniac Recognitions for 2008 that have already been announced during the course of the year are the Keongomaniac Fantasy Epic of the Year (Prince Caspian), Keongomaniac Movie Event of the Year (The Dark Knight) and the Keongomaniac Villain of the Year (The Joker). This is however the first time the Blue Border tile for 2008 has been revealed. Previous announcements were not accompanied with the official Blue Border as of the one featured above.

The Harry Potter Quiz Grand Prix 2008

The results of the Harry Potter Quiz Grand Prix 2008 stands as follows:

Maria and Hazwan "Eyesex" are the first-ever co-Champions of the Grand Prix with and eventual total scores of 123 each. Coincidentally and controversially too, both of them are the organisers of the event and part of the infamous Harry Potter Grand Prix Committee.

This had led to some disturbing allegations that the competition were rigged by the corrupted Committee from the beginning. Their inability to break their tie to declare a proper winner has also been seen as a clear indication that due to some discrepancies in the questions asked, a secret compromise has been reached between them to remain 'co-winners' so as to prevent further bloodshed in the wizarding world, where violent demonstrations have been held to pressure them into declaring the 'real' winner.

The Hermione Badge (which belongs to the contender with the highest points at any point of the game) however, is undisputedly bestowed to Maria, who held the Badge longest for most parts of the game. She is thus now known as Maria Granger. Recent studies have also reveal that there could be a possibility that Maria and Hermione are distantly related, which explains why she has more affinity to the Badge.

The team group of Feeza-Rinny-Faisal won 2nd Place with 65 points, though it is no doubt new contender Myrah (who joined their team later) was instrumental in them gaining most of the scores.

Myrah was supposed to join the Iqbal-Saifudeen team but was clearly influenced to join Feeza-Rinny-Faisal instead. This 'merging' system would be placed under investigation by the Committee. While it is clear both Maria and Eyesex were dominating the Game, Myrah's late entry did send chills down Eyesex's spine, who suspected her of taking Felix Felicis potion, which makes her lucky.

Interestingly, with Maria Granger and Hazwan Eyesex getting equal top scores of 123 which makes them co-Champions and sharing the 1st Place, it allows the last team of Iqbal-Saifudeen to still clinch the 3rd Place with 28 points.

Singapore's First Opposition MP Dies

JB Jeyaratnam passed away of heart failure early today at 1.30am at the age of 82. The former leader of the Workers' Party of Singapore (currently the biggest Opposition party in Singapore) was the first ever Opposition to get elected to Parliament in 1981, 15 years after Singapore's independence from the British where the People's Action Party (PAP) had ruled effectively since as a one-party state.

In his famous victory speech, he declared to have won against the "almighty PAP" with his historic electoral gain. Subsequently in his later life he faced defamation lawsuits from PAP leaders Lee Kuan Yew and Goh Chok Tong (both former Singapore Prime Ministers) which eventually brought to his bankruptcy and forced exit from politics.

JB Jeyaratnam will always be remembered as the lone figure of truth who endlessly fought for democracy in his country and for his bravery in standing up to incumbent forces.

The Keongomaniac expresses his grief and condolences to the late national leader and wishes for his memory to be the symbol of hope and resilience for the Opposition in Singapore.

Thanking the generous crowd for "all their love" during the opening, it proves to materialise later in 3 Moonman statuettes. Believe it or not, Britney who was first known for her hit song Baby One More Time has never receive a MTV VMA award before, making the win the first 3 of her career, all through her song Piece of Me.

Some reports after the night's event also referred to Britney as a "pop queen" rather than the former princess of pop. Britney Spears's awesome win definitely had elevated her status in Haz Wayne's World, where she once had enjoyed immense popularity and recognition during her pop heyday.

Too Much Cheese Is Not Too Cheesy

Perhaps in honour of fellow Founder Dian Hudson's yellow-inspired tudung, the unofficial motto and mantra of the Founders Four has been adopted: "Too much cheese is not too cheesy". Coined by Founder Shukri Legolas out of his wildest imagination, one can only stop to wonder what he actually meant. The belated birthday girl nonetheless got a memorable mini Effour celebration by the Bay and Hut, quality never compromised!

By now at the end of the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympics, the world is simply all praises for host nation China. It was the superb Games they organised and the gracious welcome the Chinese gave as they went full-gear to take on the world stage. The People's Republic also broke record for being the first nation to attain 51 gold medals, the most number ever. Thus it is the first time China tops the Olympic medal tally charts, a spot normally dominated by the United States and the former Soviet Union (now Russia). It clearly reflects China's rise in this Asian century. But Uncle Sam is unhappy. Compare the two charts below showing the final top 11:

The tally above is the somewhat official chart with China on top due to its highest number of gold, as these charts normally depict. It is of course a fact that the US do get the most number of medals in total but by the standards accepted by all civilised nations of the world, this chart is the accepted version and thus appeared in all the newspapers in the world, except...

the American ones. The US media chose to depict the chart which shows the total medal tally as being the top. So not surprisingly, the United States is at the top of the charts, with China second. I mean, how irritating is that? This move has already drawn huge criticisms from many parties. Here is America, who could harp on Michael Phelps endlessly for his 8 gold medals, but simply feel insecure over China's overall performance in its own homeground? And they have the cheek to keep repeating on the Chinese media being too restricted when its own so-called free media has not openness enough to embrace true victory? I would say shame on you America. You are the losers. When people remembers the Beijing Olympics, surely they would know the Chinese are the real winners.

On the last day of Taiwan, I went with my fellow medic friends to behold the current tallest building in the world. Taipei 101 is the symbol of Asian dynamicism, following the tradition of Malaysia's Petronas Twin Towers it overtook 4 years ago. Witnessing the towering building is a breathtaking experience. Humbled by its high presense the Taipei 101 embodies a modern architecture inspired by ancient design - an inverted pagoda of contemporary stature complete with ideals like the Chinese old coins and heavenly clouds. Irreplaceable finally replaces Listen

The Keongomaniac, with the approval of the Board of Commission for the Keongomania Awards, has released the latest changes to the results of the 2007's Keongomaniac Recognitions. This time it concerns the Keongomaniac Songs of the Year, one of the more anticipated recognitions in the Awards.

Irreplaceable is Irreplaceable

Beyonce Knowles's Irreplaceable is widely accepted as a Song of the Year (2007), though due to conflicting information, the Dreamgirls soundtrack Listen appeared in the official records. Apparently Irreplaceable's time of release could not be determined at the time the results were first released late last year. The other 2 Songs of the Year (Gwen Stefani's The Sweet Escape and Sean Kingston's Beautiful Girls) remains untouched. Fans of Beyonce heaved a sigh of triumphant relief as Irreplaceable finally replaces Listen, a move they felt should have been done when the first set of changes to the Awards took place a few months after.

Waiting For You in Rehab

In addition to Irreplaceable, the Keongomaniac Songs of the Year award seemed to have been further refined to add an Overall Song of the Year - won by Amy Winehouse's Rehab. It is a beffiting move and has be hailed critically as "succint and accurate". At the time the Awards were first released, there were concerns that Rehab had been given an oversight. Following the format that would prominently be featured in this year's Keongomania Awards, also included is the Special Mention accolade. A Special Mention is not an award per se, but it is still a recognition in its own right. 2007's Special Mention For Keongomaniac Song of the Year is given to Elliot Yamin's Wait For You.

The Final Changes

This marks the second and final time changes would be made to the results of the 2007 Keongomaniac Recognition. This move has already been criticised by many parties as being "fickle", while others expressed concerns that results for the coveted Awards might be rushed thus not accurate. The following are the changes made earlier prior to this instant.

TMNT replaces Ratatouille as Keongomaniac Animation of the Year (2007).

The idea for a Keongomaniac Writer of the Year award was initially abandoned, but was later included, adding a further win for Harry Potter in 2007.

P.Ramlee Returns to Singapore [Part 1]

P. Ramlee the Musical. The Life, the Loves, and the Inspiration

Seniman Agung* Tan Sri Dr P. Ramlee, the legend of the Malay entertainment industry, would be immortalised in a award-winning musical from the producers of the acclaimed Puteri Gunung Ledang: The Musical. It is back by popular demand in Singapore, after its hugely successful debut in Kuala Lumpur last year. Behold the Legend as he returns to the birthplace of his ingenuity!

P. Ramlee Returns to Singapore

I've heard of the P. Ramlee the Musical since its first production last year. It roused my interest immediately especially since it is produced by the same people who brought to us the greatly acclaimed Puteri Gunung Ledang: The Musical, which I truly enjoyed watching, and changed my mindset of Malay theatre in general. I was thus rather disappointed that it was only staged in Kuala Lumpur that year. Though a few months back I chanced upon its website which proudly declared it would do a second running, this time round in Singapore and KL, due to popular demand, and the 35th anniversary of the late P. Ramlee's passing.

In the words of Tiara Jacquelina, the musical's executive producer, she got "chills" just thinking about the prophetic journey the production made making its way to Singapore, which was where the legend made his name and mark. Singapura being the hub and heart of the Malay film industry then, now fondly remembered as the Golden Days of Jalan Ampas (the road name where Shaw Brothers' Malay Film Productions was located).

For a rather belated buying of the tickets, we got pretty good seats. Special Occasions Friend Isrin Anak Datuk J would have looked fabulous and fit right in with a nice kebaya to rival the makciks. And as expected, the musical was not a disappointment at all, but of huge entertainment value and a sheer tribute to the Father of Malay Films. P. Ramlee is arguably so well loved by the Malay community that I believe saying a single bad thing about him would have been seen as taboo at the very least.

His Life, Loves and Inspiration

True to the musical's tagline, the story-telling of P. Ramlee's life is shown through his loves in various parts of his lifetime, and thus his inspiration for his music and films. Though I would still say P. Ramlee the Musical cannot beat Puteri Gunung Ledang: The Musical in terms of its epic scale, this is perhaps the latter is considered a period production, which almost always have the upper hand bias. P.Ramlee the Musical is actually good in its own right, meticulously documenting his life journey to stardom and his legendary endeavours which was history itself in the making. The musical starts with a backdrop which is designed to bring us make to the golden years, and heck it did!

The Living Legends - P. Ramlee and Saloma

It cannot be denied that the backbone of the musical was truly held by pretty impressively by Musly Ramlee, a famous impersonator and P. Ramlee look-alike, who brought the legend to life, and very much alive and kicking. I have no offence to Sean Ghazi (who played the role last year, possibly due to his international profile), but i feel Musly Ramlee was really impeccable in imitating the nuances of the legend, from his mannerisms to his singing style. Liza Hanim was equally commendable in bringing Saloma (the 50s-60s version of pre-Siti Nurhaliza) to life, she being the life-partner and last wife of P.Ramlee. My particular favourite was when they sang Senandung Kasih, their trial duet in the play. It was truly as if you're listening to the legendary couple themselves!

Another worthy mention is the use of real (albeit obviously reproduced) newspaper and video footages plus posters which all in all brings out the essence of the times. It exults the authenticity of the age thus brings legitimacy to the play.

The Mystery of Azizah

Azizah is well-known as the name of P. Ramlee's love interest in Penang before he came to Singapore. Some even confidently name her his first love. Her details however remains a great mystery till this very day. The character was acted by Siti Nurhaliza in its first season last year (thus also adding interest to the musical, it being Siti's first theatre exposure) but is replaced by actress Emelda in the recent one. It is perhaps befitting for the producers to ask Siti Nurhaliza to play the mysterious first love of the Legend, she being the epitome of great beauty and innocence.

Azizah came to light because it is the name of the song P. Ramlee composed in honour of her. It was this very song which he performed that made Malay Film Productions director BJ Rajhans scout him out and offered him to go to Singapore, as accurately acted out in the musical. This song was also a theme song of the film Penarek Becha (The Trishaw Man), the first-ever Malay film directed by a Malay (P. Ramlee), who named his heroine Azizah. This is despite the fact he was already married to Norizan (who was his second wive, after his divorce with Junaidah, his first). In the musical, it is depicted that this move made Norizan extremely jealous.

This truly intruiged me, for it shows how much an inspiration Azizah was to P. Ramlee, even after his rise to fame and respect (befitting too of the musical's direction in tying his life, loves and inspiration). And truly, "Azizah" was almost as though a good luck charm to him, prophetically the song he was scouted from, and strategically his first directed film.

The Dark Knight is expected to be 2008's Movie Event of the Year

The sequel to Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, due to hit the big screens on July this year, has been singled out as the potential winner to the prolific Keongomaniac Movie Event of the Year (2008).

The Keongomaniac Movie Event of the Year was won by Dreamgirls last year, beating favourites like Transformers (which nonetheless won the Keongomaniac DVD of the Year, and Female of the Year for Megan Fox's role).

The "manner in which (the movie) is watched" is said to be a sheer consideration for the award, which caused Transformers's defeat in the nomination. Should that be the case, it is extremely crucial for The Dark Knight to be a 'movie event' in order to secure the recognition. The Keongomaniac Movie Event of the Year is considered to be the most prestigious award in the Movies category.

This is due to the huge success of the inaugural Batman Begins, and the dramatic performance of the reinterpreted Joker. Furthermore the untimely death of Sir Heath Ledger gives an added hype to the already eagerly-waited sequel. Sir Heath's critically acclaimed role, according to The Keongomaniac, has made it "more or less confirmed" that The Joker is the winner of the Keongomaniac Villain of the Year, won by Lord Voldemort in 2007. Even more ground shaterring, Batman is set to challenge the throne of Superman in Haz Wayne's World by being a sole 2008's Keongomaniac Hero of the Year.

The Heath Factor

Should The Dark Knight manages all 3 recognitions in the Keongomania Awards, it would be a worthy rival to Mariah Carey's expected big win. 2008 could then be either The Year of Mariah Carey, or more interestingly, The Year of The Dark Knight. The late Sir Heath Ledger has already been knighted the Sword and Shield of High King Peter of Narnia, the highest recognition in Haz Wayne's World with the Keongomaniac Lifetime Achievement Award. This could jolly well tip the scales to The Dark Knight's favour.

Up-and-coming Queens Battle it out for Female of the Year (2008)

The great race to be 2008's Keongomaniac Female (Artiste) of the Year is on! The babelicious contenders are none other than the reigning queens in Haz Wayne's World - singer songwriter Mariah Carey and American-Jewish Hollywood actress Natalie Portman.

Both are long-time favourites of The Keongomaniac, and this year looks set to bestow one of them as the prestigious title Female of the Year, won by actress Megan Fox last year in her role in Transformers.

The Battle of the Queens came upon Mariah's achievement in beating rock'n'roll legend Elvis Presley in the American Billboard charts with 18 number 1 singles. Her new album E=MC2 has also been acknowledged as a worthy winner to be Keongomaniac Album of the Year. Beating the King has already made speculation of Mariah being the next Queen - Queen of R&B-Pop, equivalent to Michael Jackson's title King of Pop. Mariah's many accolates in Haz Wayne's World have had observers predicting that she could unsurprisingly win the most number of Keongomaniac Recognitions in this year's Keongomania Awards, thus making 2008 "The Year of Mariah Carey", just as 2007 was The Year of Harry Potter.

Natalie Portman on the other hand, dubbed as "the only Jew the Keongomaniac really loves, apart from Superman", is a shoo-in with her dramatic portrayal of Anne Boleyn (who became Queen of England) in The Other Boleyn Girl, the only movie to be awarded with Fivestars since the inception of the Keongomaniac Khronicles blog. The Keongomaniac is said to be "itching" to place Natalie in a formally recognised position in Haz Wayne's World, given her past excellence in Star Wars (where she is Queen of Naboo for a time) and especially V For Vendetta.

For now the royal rumble shall continue till a clear winner appears in the course of the year. But till then, let the Queen-bees fight it out, and may the best female wins!

Why Heroes Fall

The artwork above depicts the legendary fight of Superman against the creature known as Doomsday, which eventually led to Superman's death (in The Death of Superman comic story arc, which is the best selling graphic novel of all time.) Superman dying was, needless to say, the unthinkable that happened and it became a touchstone moment in comic history.

Why is it necessary for us to know that even heroes do fall, or even die? Simply for a fact that they do. Heroes may be seen as the all-perfect, infallible figure of truth and justice, but everyone has their Achilles' Heel. Weaknesses make us human, and being human we were never designed to be perfect, though how much we strive for perfection. We are the grand product of God's creation and we do remember that the Original Sin made Adam and Eve descend to earth. We do fall. But from there we live, and let live.

Falling into despair is similar to feeling the comings of doom. The road of no-return is a fear undertaken by even the strongest of us. The Man of Steel and the Man of Tomorrow is no exception. Heroes perhaps expect the world out of themselves, meaning not only they take on the weight of the world on their shoulders, they would not even give in to their faults for fear of failing others or especially their own self.

Why then do we still look up to our heroes, or still wear the trappings of one for some? If heroes can fall just as much as any of us, then why bother with them? It is because heroes are not mere figures. They are sheer ideals. They sre a symbol of our dire need to know there is Good out there, and that bad times would come to pass. As Superman's father rightfully put it,

"They can be a great people, Kal-El, they wish to be. They only lack the Light to show them the way... For this reason above all, I've sent them you"

There must be a hero in and within every one of us. It is a beacon of light as we find our way out of the dark passage of despair. It is the undying symbol of hope. And knowing that it can fall and die like any of us just makes us able to relate to it even more, understanding that the Hero and the Self are not that different after all. They are an inseparable entity. And when it becomes one, we are invincible.

As such we always do remember, that even heroes have the right to dream. And that even heroes have every damn right to bleed. Especially to bleed.

Policing the Past and Future

I so do not have anything to update, nor any interesting topics to talk about.

Anyway a few days back i decided to reconfigure my old NPCC uniform. Meaning to say, putting back all the buttons and badges to the way it was, and not surprisingly, it wasn't that hard to put together in spite of the long gap. Ages since i did that! I reckoned they had had their fair share of display and its finally time to keep it in the cupboard. Amazingly, i actually found my beret under my bed, still being 'seasoned' after all this time. So there it is up there, as good as new, the uniform Station Inspector Mohamed Hazwan once wore.

Immortalising the Old Blue Glory is one thing, but doing so made me thing about my future for a bit. I'd always maintained that joining the Police Force 'has always been one of my career options'. I did my research before, a minimum degree with second-upper honours would make me Assistant Superintendent Mohamed Hazwan with the starting salary of $3505. But i'm also into broadcast journalism on the other hand, which is why i'd wanted t o take Communications Studies at NTU, or at least minor in it.

Though i missed the Force as part of my NS experience (darn lucky you Shukri!), somehow i still have a feeling, I've yet to see the end of the Man in Blue. I guess only Time can tell. For now, all's green for me. With the cross of red of course. :)

Of Heath and Higher Echelons

I'm not sure why Heath Ledger's death affected me quite particularly. I mean, many would just dismiss it as another death of yet another movie star, bla bla bla.. you get the drill. Not to mention he is one of favourite actors of all-time, a man-crush would seem rather pushing it.

It Would Be Soon Before Long
But it is more than that. If you know someone close enough, there is something about his passing which would seem difficult - comprehending the idea that you would never see the person again. While the late Heath is the issue, Death in general is what I'm talking about. I mean loving Heath Ledger as an actor, naming him the Second Hottest Male, and then suddenly you will never get to see him again. A tad too soon?

Idolised Charm
Honestly if it was Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt or the likes, i really could not be bothered, they died, fine. But my Heath Ledger? I mean i would love to be him. His voice, his demeanour, the way he act, the look in his eyes, his smile. In other words, his charm. His charm which i very much emulate. He is my idol. So for those who had been taken in by my supposed charm at some point or another, you know who to thank. And sadly he is no longer among the living.

A Hero Within
The thing about Heath Ledger is that he is not altogether that perfect. An article i read described him as "not-so-handsome". Certainly he is not that tall either, and does not have the vavavoom traits of Hollywood giants like the muscled Brad Pitt. But i feel there lies his greatest strength. Someone who is all too ordinary, seemingly mundane but undeniably charming.

Never Be Replaced
I think i may still be in a state of shock over his untimely death. Having loved his portrayal in The Patriot, The Four Feathers and Casanova, and eagerly awaiting his reinterpretation of The Joker, i cant seem to want to accept the fact that beyond that, i'll never see him acting again. I am so proud of declaring him my favourite actor, when many would find that a weird choice. And honestly speaking, even though they placed Hollywood's big names Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell to continue his role in his unfinished last fantasy film The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (directed by Terry Gilliam, who also directed Brothers Grimm, where Heath was one of its titular character), it is an honour yes to have 3 biggies replace Heath, but nonetheless not the same. Heath's choice of daring and unconventional roles makes him a critic's favourite. His performance as the new Joker already gave him rave reviews, and how respected an actor it would have made him, but now we will never know.

The Keongomaniac and the Ledger Quest
I'm in a quest of getting all the dvds of the movie he had acted in, well knowing full well that he would never starr in any more films. I already had The Patriot DVD and Casanova VCD, but i bought Casanova and Brothers Grimm DVDs a day after he died. Recently i got the seemingly impossble-to-get The Four Feathers DVD, and soon, A Knight's Tale. Right now i'm still in search of his first movie the teenage flick 10 Things I Hate About You. Tell me if you know where i can get it!

The Incredibly Rare Joker Poster
In addition to that, last week i wanted to also find posters of him, being the poster-collector that i am. And that's how i end up getting the incredibly rare and valuable Original Movie poster shown in the picture above. Believe it or not, it is worth $80 now, and is only available through advance order. This is due to the fact that upon Heath Ledger's death, Warner Bros apparently recalled The Dark Knight teaser poster featuring The Joker. The Batman Begins' sequel initial marketing strategy is centered on The Joker. But given Heath's death, Warner Bros put a halt to that, out of respect for his recent passing. I was actually waiting for the theatrical poster for The Dark Knight, hoping for a clearer and nicer depiction of Heath as The Joker, but the likelihood of this is apparently pretty slim, for Warner Bros did not wish to bank on Heath's death to make a profit. This is quite sad though, because of course people would have bought it. So overnight, the teaser poster of The Joker above becomes valuable, jumped from $40 to double its price. I am a proud owner of such a rare piece.

Coming of Age and Comprehending Death
On the major theme of death, last year saw the passing of two of my close uncles. I'm closer to the late Ayah of course, whose eulogy i wrote in an entry last year. Similarly, i would never be able to see them again. An irreversible but an inevitable fact of life. It would of course be a mistake to think that accepting death is part of growing up. For death can occur anytime, and a death of a loved one can even take place, although cruelly, to someone of a very young age. Many often wondered about their own death, but i would say a death of someone close to you is a more tricky situation to be in. How do you grasp such an idea, how incomprehensible is it for you not to see someone again, like forever? Perhaps there's something about coming of age that makes me think of all these things, but maybe particularly because befittingly it all take place at this stage of my life.

Shoe Converse-ion

After months of deliberation, finally the new shoes have come to order.

I got this olive green + off white Converse shoes quite painstakingly. It is quite a rare edition - with the unique thick stripes at the side, and the thick shoelaces. This colour is also particularly hard to find. It's not available in many Converse shops. Trust me, i tried. I also had difficulty getting the right size for my big feet, for Converse shoes mine's a size 9 (for army boots it is a 10, yikes).

I know, as if getting one Converse shoe is not enough, i got another one - a 'school shoe' white one, though it comes with a double grey lines at the sides which i took a liking for (compared to the normal black, red or blue). This one is for everyday use, for wear and tear. Speaking of which, when you see my old shoes below, you would definitely agree i need new ones.

I think the picture makes the shoes nicer than it really is. It is blacker and dirtier in person. This shoe had had a long history, bought it when i was in Sec. 4 i think, which was like, 6 years ago? It was spanking white then. I shall miss you bluey.

There is no doubt about this one. I can't remember how i got this one though. On the flipside (literally), they were no better. It is so worn out, if its raining i can feel water sipping in my shoes, wetting my socks, and yes ultimately my feet.

I told you.

Past Blasts on Many Fronts

Surely by now i've tried by all means possible to refrain from writing 'i-hate-army' entries, for fear of being seen two-dimensional or something. Though, seeing Isrin's entries of past muzium artefacts had somehow generated a fair bit of response from our friends, causing a string of nostalgia-inspired entries to surface.

I've told to some that i've missed school. I think other than the fact that there was where you have your close friends at close proximity (or not), for my case the academic institution was also a place for developing other talents that you may have within you, waiting to be realised. This is possibly the reason why i am not enjoying this anti-pinnacle time of my life, where opportunities for such ventures are sadly limited.

Picture above is taken after i took my last A-level paper, evidenced by the striking out of the damnable list on the board. It is officially the last day i dawn the uniform too.

I particularly liked this bit of my A-level school graduation cert, where my teachers stated:

"He is committed to his values and beliefs and these guide him in achieving clarity of vision and sense of purpose. He enjoys developing his character and personality on many fronts - in academic aspects, sports, leadership and the arts. He encourages others, through his example, to do the same."

I personally loved the 'many fronts' thingy, its soo true and i couldn't have put it better myself.

A nicely taken picture of the 2006 MI Hockey Boys Team. We painstakingly managed to clinch the 4th position in the 'A' division national tournament, the closest victory next to our predecessor the legendary Jurong Institute record of 1st place for both Boys and Girls Team in the same year.

I took on Hockey back in PJC too, before letting it go in favour of Students' Council. Why hockey? Well not many knew this, but i did it in honour of my mother, she was a hockey player back in her youth (during her days only wooden hockey sticks were available, with a nasty hooked front!). It just seemed right, especially since i'd wanted to join a sporting team.

I had always been in a leadership body since primary school, and it was my last opportunity to know what "training in a team and go for tournaments" feel like. When i got to Millennia Institute which allows me to take on both Students' Council and Hockey, i took the challenge. Though regretably, since this ventures needed different commitments of their own, training time for hockey was ultimately 'sacrificed' in favour of studies and Council, thus in hockey my abilities were not as developed as they could have been.

Orientation themed Supernovation was the last project undertaken by the 2nd Students' Council in which i am part of. Befittingly it was the best we came out with, and easily the most memorable. And of course i am very proud to have proposed the 'clan-system', to which enlightened individuals helped to make it happen, and inevitably proved to be an immediate success.

The 2 pictures above are totally rare. Thank God i got hold of them! In this picture we see the bedrock of the fun the orientation had, the unbeatable Games Committee - headed by Michelle (white watch), myself (in the red tie) and Joel (blue shorts). I dunno what came over me, but the unlikely trio proved to be insatiably perfect, of course after numerous bloodletting decision-makings.

Important lesson learnt in that course of time is that leaders are not leaders until they prove their worth, and no measure of position, post or name can dispute that. *winks*

Well school also perhaps open the way to something beyond mere academic, and even outside the boundaries of the building. It was an eye-opener in many ways but you can't excel in what you're uncomfortable in, and truth be told, that is why the army experience fails for me as well.

The reason why Nabella is christened 'DP' for eternity. It is a reminder on how she tricked me into doing hip-hop infront of the entire school on Teachers' Day, for her supposed 'jazz dance'. Big-time ahakz. I don't believe in letting my body go, but it was a nice change. And recently watching some dance moves of the dancers in a Mariah Carey consert inspired me. :P

And how can one forget the unforgetable dikir days, whose influence came from all-time best buddy Shukri Shuhaimi. Those 3 years or so certainly were much missed, and the above is the last perfomance of the now-defunct BayanA, at a function of its birth place, the Ar-Raudhah Mosque.

And my dream of representing the school in dikir barat was realised too in Millennia's Emas, seen together with girls group Anja Digma here at Piala Khatulistiwa 2006. Though we didn't win, it was a nice closure to my dikir days, being my last performance as well.

And one almost forget, that whatever my MI days were, i had still came from PJC and had spent one year there. In a stunningly rare picture above again, taken at the NACLI camp of the budding 5th Students' Council, where presidents and ex-cos means nothing then.

Though after a year, convinced that i will not excel academically there. And with the Council getting corrupted and too bureaucratic, despite being a co-Head of Social and Relations, i took my leave in what was to be the turning point of my A-level course experience.

And a year later I made a nostalgic homage pilgrimage to PJC at their passing-down investiture as a Millennian councillor (seen in the red tie). And such warm welcome they gave me too!

So with all such major experiences shared, all the ups and downs, tumulteous they may be, it is still such a character-building time in addition to the maturity of mind academically. I would say nothing can take that place, and above all they are the ones i truly miss when i finally receive that fateful A-level cert.

One of Hollywood's rising star, Australian-born Heath Ledger passed away in his apartment in New York the day before yesterday from apparent drug overdose, though at present, his autopsy is still inconclusive.

Heath Ledger was one of The Keongomaniac's favourite actors, fresh from the fame of Mel Gibson's The Patriot (2000). He has noted performances as the titular Casanova (2005) and the semi-historic The Four Feathers (2002). The news of his untimely death shocked Haz Wayne's World, where seven days of mourning would be observed. In the coming weeks, a re-run of movies starring Ledger such as The Patriot and Casanova would be played in honour of him, with purchase of The Brothers Grimm on the way.

His departing also paved the way for the coming-soon The Dark Knight to be a main highlight, with his interpretation of The Joker hailed by many to be named 2008's Keongomaniac Villain of the Year.

In the year 2006, Heath Ledger was placed No.2 in the infamous Haz Wayne's Hottest Males Charts, together with Hayden Christensen. He is known for his charming demeanor and deep voice, which captivates the audience in all of Haz Wayne's World till this day.

And I feel he had gave his best in what is to be his last role as the iconic Joker in The Dark Knight.
